The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition Preview for Xbox
Posted on Sunday, September 28, 2003 @ 11:45:39 am E.S.T

Morrowind: Game of the Year edition packs the punch of the original Elder Scrolls 3 game, and adds a hell of a lot more. Instead of just releasing a game with minor additions, you値l experience two whole new adventures. The game includes both of the PC expansion packs, Tribunal and Bloodmoon, in addition to the highly acclaimed Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.

The premise of the original game was both simple and extremely complex: an extremely open-ended RPG game where what you do is up to you. You are brought to the land of Morrowind, where you are freed of your prisoner-status and issued to report to a man which gives you tasks to complete. As the game progresses your character joins guilds and makes alliances with other characters, all while having the ability to venture to wherever you choose. The land of Morrowind, without even counting the areas included with the expansion packs, is enormously vast. There are dozens of cities to visit, not to mention hundreds of characters to talk with, all of which have different personalities.

You値l select from numerous classes to customize your character, from Dark Elves to all sorts of humans. In addition you are given the opportunity to select from numerous skills to apply to your character. This is all done either manually or through a conversation with another character.

You値l meet many characters in your travels, and depending on your attitude towards them they値l become your friend, and consequently, more helpful. Your skills effect all aspects of the game, including your speaking skills, so make sure to practice.

As you travel through cities you have the ability to become a thief and steal anything from anyone, although you should be careful not to be caught as most of the folks in Morrowind have some tricks up their sleeves.

Combat ranges from using swords to bow and arrow to magic. You値l collect weapons and spells by purchasing them with money you致e earned from quests [or have stolen], defeating enemies or stealing. The barter system is on the complicated side and takes some getting used to, but becomes natural as you become more acquainted with the game.

You値l be able to take your Xbox saves from the original Morrowind game and continue on with the addition of the expansions to further increase your character痴 power and prosperity. For those who did not own the original Morrowind, they値l be able to start from the beginning of the game with the additions from Tribunal and Bloodmoon waiting for them.

In Tribunal, you get to venture to the capital of Morrowind, Mournhold. In Mournhold you will meet the two remaining god-kings of Morrowind; Almalexia and Sotha Sil. In addition you値l find much larger caves and temples than in the original.

Bloodmoon, the more exciting of the two expansions, will bring your characters to a frozen island, Solstheim. You will face the ferocity of winter as you fight against new enemies including trolls, wolves and ice minions. Another awesome addition that Bloodmoon adds is the ability to change into a wear wolf at will. You値l become much stronger and faster than your character would be in their original form. However, if you happen to transform in the vicinity of a fellow character, your status will be reported to the officials and you will be attacked.

Other additions to Morrowind: GOTY include almost all of the patched updates Morrowind PC received. These will fix many of the issues with original game and will hopefully allow for a more level playing field. One such example is the ability to see your enemy痴 health bar, rather than how in the original you had no idea how much you had damaged your opponents. However, the logbook enhancements were not brought along from the PC version to the GOTY edition.

Having played Morrowind and its expansions on PC I can easily say that Morrowind: GOTY is sure to please gamers, especially fans of the original. In total there is easily several hundred hours of gameplay in Morrowind: GOTY. With all of these major additions you値l sure to spend another eternity with Morrowind.
