Command & Conquer: Generals Review for PC
Posted on Monday, April 14, 2003 @ 09:03:35 am E.S.T

Select from 9 powerful generals and command your own massive army. EA had a lot of pressure to make a game superior to its last game, Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge, which had a respectable community size behind it. Tiberian Sun fans as well as Red Alert fans wanted a bigger then life RTS to play, now that there own games of choice were beginning to lose there punch. That's just what they got with C&C Generals.

Design: The new state of the art 'SAGE' engine is unlike any Command and Conquer game. Use the new engine to build and lead an army of your desired nation into battle, whether it be China, the United States, or the Global Liberation Army. There are some balance issues (C&C seems to struggle with this), but that doesn't hold this game back from still being very fun and competitive.

All in all there are over 60 distinct units. For example with China's Red Army you can battle with its horde of Battlemasters, or choose to over power your enemy with massive amounts Overlords and Mig air support. If you choose the U.S. you could rush in with Hummvies filled with Rocket Infantry, or overpower your enemy with Strong Crusaders and Paladin Tanks. You also might want to choose the guerrilla war tactics of the GLA. The GLA's rocket buggies and bomb trucks offer a few handy solutions to the U.S. and Chinese treats.

Graphics: Generals graphics are probably the best graphics in any real time strategy game to this date, with Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in a close second place. You can battle it with your enemy in 3D urban cityscapes, deserts and frozen wastelands.

Sound: The music gives the game a "real war feeling", but there's truely nothing like the sound of the nuke you just fired blowing up half your opponent's base. This games sound is definitely nothing to complain about.

Addiction: Single player mode in Generals can be really addicting the first few weeks you have it, that is until you beat all 27 levels multiple times. If you have broadband internet and a fast computer, you will be hooked to the fun and competition of playing Generals online.
