Midnight Club II Review for PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Posted on Thursday, April 17, 2003 @ 12:03:35 pm E.S.T

Midnight Club II takes street racing to a whole new level. If you have a forte for racing games like I do, you'll love this game. Midnight Club II puts its predecessors failure behind, and has a new technology called "railbranching" that gives the AI the ability to take many different paths while racing through the map. This game is competitive, fun, and well worth your time.

Design: In Career Mode you start out in LA and make your way to Paris and then to Tokyo. You start with a pretty weak car, but as you win races you get to keep your opponents cars and develop cool racing skills that will help you out in future races. Some of these skills include using NOS, Slip Stream Turbo, Weight Transfer, and more. You can collect 28 cars and motorcycles in all by getting first place in the races while playing Career Mode.

In all of the Arcade Mode races you can race by yourself or with a friend. You have 4 different types of games to choose from. Battle, Career, Cruise and Circuit. In Battle you can play Capture The Flag, which I find to be the most fun, or Detonate. In Career you can do the Career Mode races. In Circuit you can choose to race in any of the 5 types of races that you see in Career Mode. When you choose Cruise you have the freedom to cruise around the map for as long as you'd like.

You’ll notice each level is packed with jumps, bridges, tunnels and other cool stuff. You’ll also notice that when the weather changes it can affect your car pretty seriously. You are going to have to be ready to race in the rain, lightning storms and in the fog. Your visibility level will go down at times, and it will be harder to find your destination. When it rains, you car slides like heck. Oh yeah and while your doing all of this fun stuff, you better make sure the cops don’t bust you!

Graphics: This games graphics blow away the graphics of almost any other PS2 racing gaming around. The shadowing is very well done, and the cars and surrounding enviroment look absolutely great. You’ll enjoy the graphics when you peel out, tap the NOS button, use Slip Stream Turbo to fly by an opponent, when you land a huge jump and sparks fly everywhere, or when you hit a gasoline tank at a gas station and blow up your car.

Sound: The soundtrack isn’t bad when you first hear it, but it can get more than irritating after many hours of playing. It's nice that you can disable it, but that doesn't make up for it's lack of quality. The cars engines sound pretty good, and so do the sounds when you peel out, slide around turns, crash, and blow up. You'll laugh when you hear your opponents talking trash to you as you race them.

Addiction: The single player mode will keep you entertained for at least 10 hours. After that point you may need to start playing against a friend in either Battle or Circuit Mode, or on PS2 Online if you have the adapter. Online mode is fun, and will definately keep you occupied for hours.
