Mutant Storm Reloaded Review for Xbox 360
Posted on Friday, December 30, 2005 @ 11:43:03 pm E.S.T

Mutant Storm Reloaded is a simple, straight-forward action title: shoot and destroy the opposition in 89 levels on various difficulties. Reloaded is competing directly with Bizarre’s Geometry Wars – and simply put, it’s better.

In Reloaded, you’ll take on various mutants in an assortment of levels. As you progress through the game, rewards will come in the form of belts – mimicking those found in martial arts. To get the basic gist of Reloaded, think Asteroids with a dash of next-generation gaming. It’s much more chaotic and while it isn’t quite as impressive as Geometry Wars in terms of the frenzied action, it still is enough to keep your attention.

Reloaded is extremely easy to play; the left analog stick controls your ship, and the right analog stick aims your ship’s gun. You can also fire off a smart bomb with the right trigger which destroys all of the surrounding enemies. A boundary surrounding the area restricts your movement to the area where enemies spawn. Power-ups, such as a shield which can help defeat the opposition. These enemies are mostly composed of little blobs that are easily killed, although there will be the occasional large sphere which can be difficult to kill due to its enhanced armor and more powerful weapons.

In Adventure mode you’ll attempt to shoot your way through all 89 levels, with the difficulty (indicated by your belt color) increasing as you progress. Tally Mode’s objective is to set a high score on any individual level with any difficulty setting. Speed and precision are necessary to post a high score in Tally Mode.

The action can get extremely chaotic, although it rarely displays the number of enemies found in Geometry Wars. Sound-wise there isn’t much to say; the sound effects are effective and the music subtle.

Reloaded also includes an offline co-operative mode where two players can compete at the same time. This is really what gives Reloaded the edge over Geometry Wars. All things considered – 89 levels, multiplayer, leaderboards - this is a solid game for only 800 Market Place points.
