X2: Wolverines Revenge Review for Xbox
Posted on Monday, April 28, 2003 @ 12:03:35 pm E.S.T

Many years ago when Wolverine's unbreakable Adamantium metal was placed as his main skeleton, a secret organization which did the operation placed a deadly virus in his body, which is set to kill Wolverine in the next 48 hours. He believes the antidote is in the lab that he was created in. Wolverine must now infiltrate the Weapon X Lab using secret combos and lot's of different weapons, and he must destroy anything or anybody that gets in his way.

Design: You control the deadly mutant Wolverine in 3rd person view. You must use Wolverine's keen sense of smell to detect enemies and enemy weapons like mines. Wolverine's mutant power of re-healing also comes in handy when you are hanging on by a small thread, trying to defeat your enemies. Wolverine also has the ability to do awesome combos with his claws and causes great amounts of chaos with his unique moves.

While going through the game wolverine uses different techniques to stay stealth. If he hasn't been seen, Wolverine can use a special strike like slamming his enemies head into a computer, or dragging a soldier out of his bed and slicing him up before he has a chance to react. At certain times throughout the game Wolverine must use other weapons, such as a gun turret to destroy the electric force field that is slowing him down. When levels are completed new combos and moves are awarded, and Wolverine becomes even more powerful.

This game also has a numerous amount of special features such as Cerebro Discs, which hold information on different mutants. Comic books hold different costumes for Wolverine (remember the yellow and blue costume from the recent cartoon series?) Lastly Dog Tags unlock special games after you receive the required amount.

Graphics: You will notice similarities between this game and Splinter Cell in the graphics department, which means this game is more than just pleasant to look at. There is immense detail on every aspect of the game. For example you can see every muscle on Wolverine's body just like you could on most action figures. When something is on fire, the fire acts realistacally and burns everything in sight.

The building detail is probably the best part of the graphics in the game. Buildings are made to look realistic, as well as the numerous boxes and items which are found throughout the game. The only thing that I see lacking well done graphics are the small computers that are around. Otherwise the graphics are completely amazing.

Sound: There is a ton of different types of sounds you will hear, and the game comes with it's own custom soundtracks. You'll hear the sounds of snow crunching, claws slicing, and people grunting after you slash them and send them into another world. When soldier’s shoot at Wolverine and miss, you'll hear the sounds of bullets bouncing off of the ground. The various mines also make a very distinct noise when using Wolverine's senses to find them. Overall the sounds of this game really give it a real life feeling.

Addiction: Wolverine's Revenge was promised to be nothing like other comic video games such as Spiderman when it was released. Now as I keep playing this game, I realize how well they accomplished this goal. The game may start off a little slowly, but as you go on it gets more enjoyable. New levels and skills will keep you entertained for hours. This game is highly addictive. The fact that this game lacks multiplater and Xbox Live capabilities hurts, but if you like single player games and love Wolverine like me, this game is still a must!
