Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Review for Game Boy Advance (GBA)
Posted on Thursday, November 27, 2003 @ 06:48:46 pm E.S.T

Arguably the most successful video game mascot has put out an unofficial sequel to Paper Mario. For the first time you will be enabled to control both Mario and Luigi simultaneously in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. You may assume that this will be the same old rescue Peach from Bowser plot. Surprisingly, that’s false. This time there’s a whole new twist in Mario’s legacy.

The story goes that, unfortunately, Peach has lost her voice. Now when she speaks she blows up things. This happens to be a big problem for our villain: Bowser. He can’t capture Peach any more because she would easily wreak havoc in his castle. So Bowser looks to his hated enemies of Mario and Luigi to help him get her voice back.

You need the team of Mario and Luigi together to rescue Peach’s voice. So moving one character causes the other to follow. For most of the game you will be using them together. In combat you will be using turn-based fighting. Mario and Luigi will take turns making attacks on your enemy. They each can perform attacks by themselves. You can use your common jump attack or you’ll be able to use other attacks later. You can also use “Brother Points” to make combo attacks using Mario and Luigi together. The attacks are very powerful yet hard to perform. You need to do the button presses in perfect stride to make the attack work. As you go on, you won’t be alerted on what buttons to press.

Both of your characters start out with the regular jump. But, as you go on you’ll be provided with more complicated moves for each character, respectively. Mario will have the spin jump and Luigi with the super jump. Also, you will later get a hammer to use for special things like fit through small spaces by hitting one another. You’ll be able to use these better once you start to level up. As you win battles you will gain more and more experience points. These points will go towards your attack, defense, speed and other ratings. Once you get more points you can use a generator to choose what you want to increase.

The graphics in the game are very well done. The only problem is the view they give you. It’s slightly tilted so you get a semi-overhead view of the game. The only problem this may cause you is seeing paths and other things. It might play tricks on your eyes because you may believe a path is going one way when it really isn’t.

For the most part controlling the characters is easy. The only tough thing about the controls is trying to juggle between the two characters. You might find it tough to get the right player in certain situations. You could become a pro at the game and still have trouble figuring out what to do in situations that require quick thinking.

Theirs is a lot of puzzle solving and discovering involved in this game. All in all, it should take you 20-40 hours even though the mystery of Peach’s voice gets solved pretty quickly. There are references to some old games in the Mario series, too. For example, at the beginning you will see a reference to Luigi’s Mansion. The puzzles are similar to those of Super Mario Bros. Just because this an RPG it shouldn’t be a turn off to you. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is a great buy for Mario and Luigi fans everywhere.
